BBQ rubs

Making your own BBQ rub from scratch
is not as hard as you would think

There is nothing wrong with using a store bought barbecue rub.
There are thousands to choose from and a lot of good ones.
That being said, making your own BBQ rub from scratch is not as hard as you would think
and can be very rewarding, adding your own taste and flair to the meal.

This has probably been the most difficult portion of the site so far
because we never measure when making our rubs

The technique I came up with for making my rubs is to add the herbs and spices in piles in a bowl so that it is easy to see the different portions. When making my BBQ rub, I start with the brown sugar because it is the base of the rub. Then I start piling up the other ingredients next to it. I know I like a lot of garlic and paprika so I make those piles about 2/3 the size of the sugar, then do the same with the rest of the ingredients.
how to make a BBQ rub
This technique started because of my ADD. I would constantly forget what ingredients I added from the recipe.
So I started pouring them in piles in the bowl so that I could easily double / triple / quadruple check what I have added. Eventually I got to the point where I could make the rub just by making the right size piles of each ingredient.
From there I just started adding more to the piles that I wanted more of.

Once mixed together, the final test is the smell and tweak as necessary.
Trust your nose. It knows what you like to taste.
